Advent proclaims that the best of us has not yet happened, it is in the making, on its way. It is our task to open up the space to receive what is to come.
Advent, as a strong season in the life of
the Church, helps to prepare us to recognize God bursting into history, to
recognize eternity breaking into time, to recognize, as St. Irenaeus of Lyons tells
us, that one of the persons of the Trinity took on our human nature to carry us
to God’s bosom.
This
third Sunday in Advent we light the third candle in our Advent wreath and at
our Cathedral, as in so many other communities, this candle is pink. This
differentiation is because on this, the Sunday of Joy, we are called to rejoice
as part of our spiritual experience. The words of the letter to the
Philippians, Chapter 4: 4 – 7, which we read this morning say:
Rejoice in the Lord
always. Again I say: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord
is near.
The closeness of God, made manifest in the
mystery of incarnation, must fill us with joy, stre
ngthen our hope, illumine
our challenges. God comes out to meet us on the paths of life, and, very especially,
in the Word made flesh.
1. Following the star is understanding that we do not follow our own selves. The first temptation for humankind, as we are told in Genesis, is to try and take the place of God. Wanting to be like gods. Following the star puts things in their place. We are creatures, called to be disciples and invited to carry out His mission.
2. Following the star is understanding that the star points to an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. The star, in other words, challenges us to recognize in fragility the presence of God. Sometimes we may expect God to come solely from a position of power, an all-powerful God; the star reminds us firstly that God chose to experience fragility and vulnerability and therefore, our fragilities and vulnerabilities are also places for the presence and action of God.
3. Following the star is understanding that God invites discipleship and calls all people to experience his salvation, but not everyone accepts this invitation. How are you preparing your heart, your life, to welcome one of the most important mysteries of faith? What is there in your heart, what are your concerns or worries? What is most significant is that God took on our human nature so we could be a part of his divine nature (2 Peter 1:4)

El adviento anuncia que lo mejor de nosotros aún no ha sucedido, está adviniendo, está llegando. A nosotros nos corresponde abrir espacio para que lo nuevo acontezca.
El adviento, como tiempo fuerte en la vida de la Iglesia, nos ayuda a prepararnos para reconocer la irrupción de Dios en la historia, para reconocer la irrupción de lo eterno en el tiempo, para reconocer, como afirma San Irineo de Lyon, que uno de la Trinidad ha habitado la humanidad para llevarnos al seno de Dios.
Este tercer domingo de Adviento encendemos la tercera vela de nuestra corona y en Catedral, como en tantas otras comunidades esta vela es rosada, y en esta diferenciación el énfasis es que este domingo estamos llamados a la Alegría, al regocijo como experiencia espiritual. El texto de la carta a los Filipenses, Capítulo 4: 4 – 7, que este domingo es proclamada dice:
Alégrense siempre en el Señor. Vuelvo a
insistir, alégrense. Que la bondad de ustedes sea conocida por todos lo
hombres. El Señor está cerca.
La cercanía de Dios, manifestada en el misterio de la encarnación nos tiene que llenar de alegría, fortalecer nuestra esperanza, iluminar nuestros desafíos. Dios sale a nuestro encuentro en los caminos de la vida y de forma particular en el Verbo encarnado.
También, como Diócesis Anglicana de Argentina, estamos unidos mediante una campaña denominada Seguí la estrella. Ello no sólo nos brinda unidad como Diócesis, sino que nos provoca a reconocer lo importante.
1. Seguir la estrella es percibir que no nos seguimos a nosotros mismos. La primera tentación humana, expresada en el Génesis, es el de querer ocupar el lugar de Dios. El de querer ser como dioses. Seguir la estrella pone las cosas en su lugar, somos creaturas, llamados al discipulado e invitados a la misión.
2. Seguir la estrella es percibir la que la estrella indica a otro, indica a un niño envuelto en pañales, en un pesebre. La estrella, en otras palabras, nos desafía a reconocer en la fragilidad la presencia de Dios. Algunas veces podemos aguardar a Dios únicamente desde una perspectiva del poder, del Dios todo poderoso, la estrella nos recuerda que en primer lugar Dios ha querido vivir la fragilidad y la vulnerabilidad y por lo tanto, nuestras fragilidades y nuestras vulnerabilidades también son espacios para la presencia y la acción de Dios.
3. Seguir la estrella es percibir que Dios invita a su discipulado y a vivenciar su salvación a todas las personas, pero que no todas lo acogen. ¿Cómo estás preparando tu corazón, tu vida, para acoger uno de los misterios más importantes de la fe? ¿Qué ocupa tu corazón, tus preocupaciones? Lo central es que Dios ha querido asumir la naturaleza humana para divinizarla (2 Pedro 1:4)
Que este domingo no perdamos de vista el sentido del Adviento como tiempo de preparación, como tiempo para generar el espacio para acoger el misterio de la natividad del Señor. Que este domingo vivamos la experiencia profunda de la alegría espiritual, del regocijo: ¡Dios está cerca! Este domingo sigamos la estrella que nos anuncia que en Jesucristo Dios ha puesto, definitivamente, su tienda entre nosotros.
